Africa is undergoing a transformative shift in the world of work, driven by technological advancements and a burgeoning population. At the forefront of this evolution stands Itana, a groundbreaking initiative poised to reshape the continent's digital economy.

Formerly known as Talent City, Itana is on a mission to create the first digital free zone in Africa, with purpose-built districts across the continent that seamlessly blend the advantages of remote work-friendly policies, robust business infrastructure, co-living spaces, high speed internet, and reliable services. This venture is not just about creating a physical space; it represents a vision for Africa's future that intertwines cutting-edge technology with a thriving economy and vibrant communities.

Revolutionising the Digital Landscape

With Africa's population projected to reach 4.5 billion by the end of the century, the continent is undergoing a seismic demographic shift. This surge in population is dovetailing with a remarkable uptick in technology investment. In 2020 alone, the tech ecosystem secured over $1.4 billion in capital, a number that skyrocketed to $6.5 billion in 2021, doubling year on year. Despite these promising numbers, Africa grapples with substantial infrastructure challenges that hamper progress. Itana recognises that for the continent's young workforce to contribute effectively to the global economy, a robust digital infrastructure is imperative.

Itana’s Transformational Blueprint

At its core, Itana aspires to create an enabling environment that empowers businesses and individuals to thrive. One key aspect is the introduction of the digital free zone, which is fundamentally trailblazing the way business is done in the continent and beyond. Unlike traditional free zones that require a physical presence, Itana’s digital free zone allows businesses to access its benefits from anywhere in the world. This includes streamlined business registration, tax incentives, and improved banking services. By enabling businesses to operate across borders without the confines of a physical location, Itana’s digital free zone dismantles barriers and opens doors for cross-border collaboration.

“Lots of the cities that are built in Africa are not properly designed. If we're able to do this right, it would create a model that can provide a blueprint to other people in the way that they build cities. We are planning to have districts across the the continent, but also to be able to take the learnings from designing those cities to create a framework for how other cities are planned and structured so that you can see that it is possible to have good infrastructure.” Nkechi Oguchi, Director at Itana explained.

Building the Future, One District at a Time

Itana’s impact extends beyond virtual paradigms. The initiative is constructing districts with meticulously planned infrastructure that addresses the unique challenges faced by businesses and individuals in Africa. With over 3,000 people expected to call the Lagos district home, Itana is setting new standards for urban design, placemaking and community building. These districts offer 24-hour electricity, high-speed internet, and a collaborative environment that facilitates innovation. In a continent where reliable infrastructure can be scarce, Itana’s model serves as a blueprint for modern, functional cities.

Catalysing Economic Transformation

Itana’s ambitions reach far beyond Nigeria's borders. By creating an environment where businesses are poised to succeed, Itana aims to attract both local and foreign companies. This not only bolsters the local economy but also positions Nigeria as an attractive hub for foreign direct investment. As companies set up shop in Itana’s district, job opportunities will burgeon, contributing to the economic transformation of the region. Moreover, Itana’s model is set to resonate beyond Nigeria, potentially shaping the way cities are designed and structured across the continent.

Crafting a Vision for Africa's Future

In the face of rapid technological change, Itana is spearheading Africa's journey into the digital age. With its digital free zones, purpose-built districts, and visionary approach, Itana is nurturing an environment where innovation thrives, businesses flourish, and individuals thrive. By redefining the narrative of work and urban living, Itana is paving the way for a more inclusive, connected, and prosperous Africa.

"The impact we will share will be different for every member [of Itana]. For me, the impact is in the way it's going to transform the way people do business and live in Africa, starting with Nigeria." Oguchi added.

Itana’s journey is more than just infrastructure: it is a promise of a brighter future for Africa and a testament to the power of innovation in shaping societies.
